Three unbranded Performance Caps with laser perforated ventilation for golf and active programs

JoinTop headwear guide · Updated October 23, 2026

Buyer’s quick answer

For a first private label hat order, start with one defined customer, one approved cap construction and a controlled number of colorways. JoinTop’s usual minimum for standard woven caps is 100 pieces per style and color. Plan sampling, decoration, packaging and freight before deciding how many designs to launch.

If you are starting a hat brand, your first supplier conversation should make the product easier to evaluate. A custom hat manufacturer for small businesses needs to know what you want to sell, who will wear it and how the first order fits your launch. A logo alone cannot answer those questions.

Choose the right route for your first hats

Route What you control Useful when
Decorate an existing blank Logo method and placement within the stock cap’s limits You want to test demand while accepting the existing fit and materials
Private label an agreed cap platform Approved construction plus your branding and selected components You need a recognizable brand product with fewer development variables
Develop a fully custom cap Pattern, materials, decoration and other agreed details Your product difference requires development and a fuller sample process

Private label can mean different things between suppliers. Confirm whether the quotation includes custom internal labels, seam tape, sweatband branding or packaging. Do not assume all of these are included in a cap price.

Understand low MOQ custom hats by style and color

JoinTop’s usual MOQ for standard woven-cap orders is 100 pieces per style per color. Two colors at that minimum are 200 caps. Two styles in two colors each are 400 caps. These examples assume each style-and-color combination meets the standard minimum; they are not permission to mix colors within one 100-piece lot.

Custom-dyed fabrics, bespoke closures, molded logos and printed packaging can create separate minimums or setup costs. Ask about them before paying for a sample. A “no minimum” decorated-stock service and a fully custom manufacturing program are different offers, so compare the actual scope.

See JoinTop’s low-MOQ development options for new brands for the starting conversation. Your written quotation should confirm which minimums apply to the chosen materials and trims.

Pick one performance-cap platform

For a golf, running or activewear launch, a five-panel or six-panel performance cap can provide a focused starting point. Choose the fit and crown profile around your target wearer. Panel count alone does not tell you whether the cap is shallow, deep, soft or structured.

Keep the first brief manageable: one main logo treatment, a clear material direction and the colors you have a reason to sell. Add complexity when it supports your brand—not simply because customization is available. The cap specification guide helps you record the essentials.

Budget the complete first order

Include development charges, samples and sample freight, any molds or decoration setup, caps, packaging, inspection or testing requirements, and delivery. Keep product cost separate from sales-channel fees and launch expenses so the comparison stays clear.

The U.S. Small Business Administration provides a startup-cost worksheet for organizing launch expenses. Its break-even calculator is a useful planning reference when comparing expected unit revenue with fixed and variable costs. Use your own quotes and assumptions; a supplier’s cap price is only one part of the calculation.

Planning question Decision to settle
What is included in the unit price? Cap construction, decoration, labels and packing assumptions
Which charges are separate? Sampling, molds, setup, testing and freight where applicable
Where must the hats arrive? Destination, shipping arrangement and required arrival date
What triggers production? Final specification, sample approval and the agreed payment step
What must remain available for a reorder? Approved files, material references and any reusable tooling

Use the sample to answer the uncertain questions

Wear the cap, adjust it and inspect the inside. Check whether the front stands as intended, whether the visor feels balanced and whether the logo scale works in person. Review material feel and decoration on the actual color. A digital mock up shows layout; it does not verify fit or construction.

Send one consolidated revision list with marked photos or measurements. Keep an approved version before production starts. If you are choosing between fabrics, resolve that during development rather than changing material after the cap has been approved.

Build the launch calendar backwards from arrival

Separate sample development, revision and approval, bulk production, inspection, dispatch and transit. Confirm the start condition and completion date for each stage. Customs processing, peak-season capacity and public holidays can affect the schedule; use the confirmed project plan for launch commitments.

Ask whether an approved early sample is available for photography and what it will cost. Keep marketing samples identifiable if they differ from production. JoinTop’s sample approval process explains the decisions that need to be closed before bulk production.

Keep a useful reorder record

After launch, track sales by color and customer feedback about fit, sweatband comfort and decoration. Retain the approved sample, logo files, specifications and packing instructions. That gives the next order a clear reference instead of restarting the project from screenshots.

Questions brand buyers ask

Can I split 100 hats into two colors?

For the usual JoinTop woven-cap MOQ, each color of each style requires 100 pieces. Two colors therefore normally mean at least 200 caps. Confirm any project-specific exception in writing.

Should I start with a five-panel or six-panel cap?

Choose around fit, profile and branding. A single-front five-panel construction can offer a continuous logo area; a conventional six-panel cap introduces a center seam. Review the actual sample rather than choosing from panel count alone.

Can I get a quote without a finished tech pack?

Yes. Send your brand, reference images, logo, intended activity, colors, quantities and delivery needs. The initial discussion should identify any assumptions that still need approval.

Does the sample fee cover every later cost?

Do not assume it does. Ask for sample, tooling, production, packaging and freight charges to be identified, including any refund or credit conditions in the written quotation.
